If your prints are coming out with faded colors, thin white lines, or entire sections missing, dried ink in the print head is almost always the cause. Here's the correct order of steps — starting with the least invasive — that clears most clogs without needing to touch anything by hand.
Before cleaning anything, run a nozzle check from the printer's maintenance menu (or through the manufacturer's app — HP Smart, Canon PRINT, Epson Smart Panel all have this built in). This prints a small test pattern showing exactly which color channels have gaps or missing lines, so you know whether you're dealing with a minor clog or something more significant, rather than guessing.
Every current inkjet printer has an automated head-cleaning function, usually under Maintenance → Head Cleaning or Print Quality Maintenance. This flushes fresh ink through the nozzles under pressure to dislodge dried ink, and resolves the large majority of clogs on its own. Run the nozzle check again afterward to confirm — sometimes one cycle isn't quite enough.
If the second nozzle check still shows gaps, a second cleaning cycle is reasonable. Beyond two or three cycles, though, further attempts rarely help and mainly just consume ink — a clog that survives that many cleaning cycles usually needs a different approach.
Some models offer a more aggressive cleaning mode beyond the standard cycle, sometimes called "Deep Clean" or "Power Clean." This uses significantly more ink but can clear a stubborn clog that the standard cycle can't. Use this only after standard cleaning has failed, since it's not meant for routine use.
On printers where the print head is a separate, removable part from the ink cartridges (common on some HP and Canon models, less common on Epson), you can remove the print head and gently soak the nozzle area in a small amount of warm — not hot — distilled water for 15–20 minutes, then let it air dry completely before reinstalling. Never use alcohol, ammonia-based cleaners, or anything abrasive, and never submerge the entire head if it contains any electrical contacts, only the nozzle plate itself. This is a last resort for a fixed print head that's not integrated into the cartridge, and isn't applicable to printers where the head is built into the ink cartridge itself and simply gets replaced along with it.
Clogging is almost always caused by the printer sitting unused for an extended period — the exposed ink at the nozzle tips simply dries out. Printing something small every one to two weeks, even just a test page, keeps ink moving through the nozzles and is by far the most effective prevention, far more reliable than any cleaning cycle after the fact.
