Brother Printer Not Printing? Here's What's Actually Wrong

By Kevin · Published August 28, 2026 · 5 min read

A Brother printer that receives a job but won't print it usually comes down to one of a small set of specific causes — most of them fixable in under a minute once you know which one it is.

1. A stuck job blocking the queue

A single failed job — often sent while the printer was off or briefly out of paper — can block every job sent after it. Open your printer queue (Windows: Settings → Printers & scanners → your printer → open queue; Mac: System Settings → Printers & Scanners), cancel every pending job, and try again with a fresh print.

2. Wireless connection dropped

Brother printers hold their Wi-Fi connection in the background, and it can drop silently after a router restart or extended idle period. Check the network status on the printer's display, or print a Network Configuration report — if it shows disconnected, run through the WLAN Setup Wizard again.

3. Toner or drum flagged as low or end-of-life

Brother laser printers often stop printing entirely, rather than printing lighter output, once toner or the drum unit crosses a specific threshold. Check the display for a "Toner Low," "Toner Empty," or "Replace Drum" message — these will typically block new jobs until addressed.

4. Wrong printer set as default

If you've set up a second printer or reinstalled this one recently, your computer may be quietly sending jobs to an old or duplicate entry. Check your default printer and remove any stale duplicates pointing at the same physical device.

5. Print spooler stopped (Windows)

The Windows service that manages the print queue can occasionally hang. Search "Services" in the Start menu, find Print Spooler, and restart it — this clears a stuck state that a simple cancel-and-retry sometimes can't.

6. Driver association broken after an update

A Windows or macOS update occasionally breaks the link between your computer and an already-installed printer driver, especially on printers set up a while ago. If the printer shows as installed but jobs go nowhere, remove it and reinstall the driver fresh from Brother's official support site.

Fastest first move

Clear the print queue before checking anything else — it resolves this more often than any other single step. If that doesn't fix it, check the printer's own Wi-Fi status next, since a dropped connection looks identical to a driver problem from your computer's side.

Still not printing after trying these?

A full driver reinstall from the official source resolves most remaining cases.
