How to Replace Toner in a Brother Printer

By Dianna · Published August 28, 2026 · 5 min read

Replacing toner in a Brother printer takes about five minutes and needs no tools: open the front cover, pull out the old toner-and-drum assembly, separate the toner cartridge from the drum unit, snap in the new toner, and reinstall. Here's the full process, plus how to tell whether the drum needs replacing too.

Step 1: Open the front cover

Turn the printer off, then open the front cover to access the drum unit — the large black assembly that holds the toner cartridge inside it. On most Brother laser models this sits directly behind the front panel and slides straight out once released.

Step 2: Remove the drum-and-toner assembly

Grip the assembly by its handle and pull it straight out, setting it on a flat, protected surface (a sheet of paper works well — toner residue can stain fabric). Avoid touching the green or teal surface of the drum itself, as fingerprints and oils can cause permanent print-quality streaks.

Step 3: Separate the toner cartridge from the drum unit

Press the small lock lever or tab on the side of the assembly (location varies by model, but it's typically labeled or color-matched to make it obvious) and lift the toner cartridge out of the drum unit. Gently rock the old cartridge side to side a few times before removing it fully — this redistributes any remaining toner and can squeeze out a little extra life if you're not ready to replace it yet, though if you're following this guide because it's already showing empty, you can skip straight to removal.

Step 4: Install the new toner cartridge

Unbox the new cartridge and gently rock it side to side several times to distribute the toner evenly before removing any protective seal or tape, following the specific instructions printed on the cartridge itself. Slide it into the drum unit until it clicks into place.

Step 5: Reinstall and close

Slide the combined drum-and-toner assembly back into the printer along its guide rails until it clicks into position, then close the front cover firmly. The printer will typically run a brief internal check and return to ready status within a few seconds.

Do you need to replace the drum too?

Toner and the drum unit are separate consumables with different lifespans — a drum typically lasts through several toner cartridges. You need a new drum, not just toner, if you're seeing:

Repeating marks or spots at a consistent interval down the page (a damaged or worn drum surface causes this in a way fresh toner can't fix). A "Replace Drum" or "Drum End Soon" message on the display, which is a separate warning from a low-toner alert. Faded or streaky print that persists even after installing a brand-new toner cartridge.

If you're only seeing a low-toner warning with otherwise clean output, you need toner only — the drum is fine.

Resetting a "toner low" warning after refilling

Genuine Brother toner cartridges reset this automatically when installed correctly. If you're using a refilled or third-party cartridge and the low-toner warning persists, most models let you clear it manually from the control panel under a menu like Settings → General Setup → Replace Toner, though exact wording varies by model — check your printer's manual if you don't see this option in the expected place.
