This is one of the more disorienting printer errors, because it directly contradicts what you can see with your own eyes. It's almost never actually about the door — it's the sensor that detects it.
Printers detect an open cover using a small physical or magnetic sensor near the hinge, not by any kind of visual check. If that sensor is dirty, slightly misaligned, or the door isn't seated in exactly the right position (even if it looks fully closed to you), the printer reads it as open regardless of appearance. This is why the fix is almost always about the door's exact seating or the sensor itself, not anything wrong with your eyes or the door's general condition.
Fully open the cover, then close it again with a firm, deliberate push until you hear or feel a distinct click. A door that looks closed but wasn't pushed all the way to its final latch position is the single most common cause.
A stray piece of packaging material, a protective strip that wasn't removed during setup, or even a jammed piece of paper near the hinge can prevent the door from seating fully even though it appears shut from the front. Open the cover again and run a hand along the inside edge to check for any obstruction.
Dust or debris directly on the sensor (usually a small tab or magnetic contact near where the door hinges) can cause a false reading. Gently wipe the area with a dry, lint-free cloth — avoid anything wet or abrasive.
Turn the printer off, unplug it, wait a full 60 seconds, then plug it back in. This clears a stuck sensor-error state that sometimes persists even after the actual physical cause has been resolved.
On some models, this error is also triggered by a cartridge or drum unit that isn't pushed all the way in, since the door's closed sensor and the cartridge seating sensor are sometimes linked in the printer's logic. Remove and firmly reinsert the ink or toner cartridge, confirming it clicks fully into place, before closing the door again.
A persistent false "door open" error after trying all of the above suggests the physical sensor itself may have failed — this is a hardware issue rather than something fixable through settings, and at that point a manufacturer service inquiry is the appropriate next step, particularly if the printer is still under warranty.
