On EcoTank and similar Epson models, the scanner lid lifts up to expose the ink tanks underneath. This specific problem — the unit lifting fine but not closing again afterward — almost always traces back to one small lock lever, not a mechanical break.
Epson's scanner unit has a small lock lever on its underside, near where it hinges. If this lever is in the locked position, the unit will physically resist closing no matter how much you push. Look for it, switch it to unlocked, and try closing the unit again — this resolves the issue in most cases.
If you were just refilling ink, check that the tank caps are fully closed and nothing — a bottle nozzle, a stray drop cloth, packaging — is sitting in the space the scanner unit needs to fold back down into.
Gently check that the internal print carriage isn't sitting in a position that blocks the lid's path. If you can see it's off to one side or stuck, don't force anything — a stuck carriage is usually cleared by a power cycle rather than manual adjustment.
Turn the printer off, unplug it, wait about 2-3 minutes, then reconnect and power back on. This resets the internal state the scanner unit's sensor uses, which can get stuck mid-operation, particularly right after ink refilling or a maintenance cycle.
If the unit visibly won't sit flush even with the lock lever confirmed unlocked and nothing obstructing it, inspect the hinges on both sides for cracking or looseness. A damaged hinge is a genuine hardware issue rather than something a reset resolves, and at that point professional service or a hinge replacement part is the realistic path forward.
