When a printer search comes back completely empty, it's almost never because the printer is actually broken — it's because the searching device and the printer aren't looking at each other on the same network. Here's how to work through it.
Obvious, but worth ruling out first — some printers take up to a minute to fully boot and join the network after being powered on, and a search run during that window will simply come back empty. Wait for the display (or a solid, non-blinking status light) to show ready before searching again.
On the printer's display, check its Wi-Fi status directly. If it shows "Not Connected" or no network name at all, that's the actual problem — the printer was never reachable to begin with, and no amount of searching from the computer side will find it. Run the wireless setup wizard on the printer first.
This is the most common cause when the printer itself shows as connected. Check the network name on the printer's display against what your computer or phone is connected to — a surprising number of "no printers found" cases come down to one device being on a guest network, a different band (2.4GHz vs 5GHz on routers that separate them), or a different Wi-Fi network entirely (like a neighbor's network with a similar name).
Some routers, especially mesh systems and guest networks, have a feature called "client isolation" or "AP isolation" that deliberately prevents devices on the same Wi-Fi from discovering each other — designed as a security measure but which also blocks printer discovery entirely. Check your router's settings for this option and disable it if enabled, or make sure you're not connected to a guest network that has it on by default.
Power cycle the printer (off, unplugged 60 seconds, back on) and separately restart your router. This clears a surprising number of stuck discovery states on both ends, particularly after either device has been running for a long time without a restart.
If automatic discovery genuinely isn't working after the above, skip it entirely and add the printer using its IP address directly — most operating systems offer this as an alternative in the same add-printer dialog. This bypasses network discovery altogether and connects directly, which works even in situations where discovery itself is broken for reasons that are hard to diagnose.
An active VPN or an overly strict firewall on your computer can block the local network discovery traffic printers rely on. Temporarily disable a VPN and retry — if that resolves it, you'll want to either exclude printer discovery from the VPN going forward or simply disconnect it when adding a new printer.
Get its IP address directly and add it manually — the most reliable fallback.
