Envelopes jam far more often than regular paper because they're uneven in thickness, have a flap, and are easy to insert the wrong orientation. Getting the loading direction and print settings right the first time avoids most of the trouble.
Some printers, particularly office-oriented laser models, have a dedicated single-sheet or envelope-specific feed slot separate from the main paper tray — check for this first, since it's designed to handle the extra thickness and is far less jam-prone than the standard tray. If your printer doesn't have one, the standard tray works, but with more attention to setup.
This is the single most common cause of both jams and upside-down printing: the flap orientation and which edge feeds first vary by printer, and there's no universal standard across brands. Check the small diagram usually printed directly on the paper tray itself (often near the paper guide) — nearly every printer has one showing exactly how to orient an envelope. If you can't find it, check your printer's manual for the specific diagram rather than guessing, since a wrong guess is the top cause of envelope jams.
Slide the paper width guides in until they gently touch the sides of the envelope — not tight enough to bend it, but snug enough that it can't shift sideways during feeding. A loose envelope that shifts mid-feed is a common jam cause distinct from orientation issues.
Before printing, set the paper type to "Envelope" and select the specific size (Envelope #10, DL, C5, etc. depending on what you're using) in your print settings — not just leave it on the default letter/A4 setting. This tells the printer to adjust feed pressure and positioning appropriately for the different thickness, which meaningfully reduces jam risk beyond just physical loading.
Unless your printer specifically supports stacked envelope feeding (check the manual — many consumer printers don't), load and print envelopes one at a time. Stacking multiple envelopes in trays not designed for it is a common cause of multi-envelope jams.
Check that the envelope isn't curled, creased, or has a padded/bulky interior (like a bubble mailer) — many consumer printers simply aren't built to feed anything beyond a standard flat paper envelope, and heavier or padded types will need to be hand-addressed instead.
