The single biggest factor in home photo print quality isn't the printer or even the photo paper — it's whether the paper type setting in your print dialog actually matches the paper loaded. Get that wrong and even the best photo printer produces mediocre results.
Photo paper has a coating specifically designed to hold ink on the surface rather than absorbing it the way plain paper does, which is what produces sharp detail and accurate color rather than a soft, slightly blurred look. Glossy paper gives more vibrant, saturated color; matte gives a softer look with less glare and fewer visible fingerprints — both are legitimate choices depending on preference, but either is a significant step up from plain paper for a real photo print.
This is the step people skip most often. In your print settings, find the paper type option (often under "Media Type" or similar) and set it to match exactly what's loaded — "Photo Paper Glossy," "Photo Paper Matte," or the specific product name if your printer's driver lists it. This setting controls how much ink the printer lays down and how it's applied, and using the wrong setting (like leaving it on "Plain Paper" while photo paper is loaded) is one of the most common reasons photo prints come out looking flat or oversaturated despite good paper.
Switch the print quality setting to "Best," "Photo," or "High Quality" — whatever your printer's highest tier is called. This uses more ink and prints more slowly, but is specifically what produces the fine detail and smooth color gradients a photo needs, versus the faster, lower-resolution output normal documents use.
Some manufacturer print dialogs let you select a specific color profile matched to the paper brand you're using (for instance, matching a specific Canon or Epson-branded photo paper line). Using the matched profile, when available, further improves color accuracy beyond just selecting the generic "photo paper" setting.
A low-resolution image (like one downloaded from a website or a heavily-cropped photo) will look soft or pixelated when printed at a larger size, regardless of how good your printer settings are — this is a limitation in the source file, not the printer. As a rough guide, aim for at least 200-300 pixels per inch at your intended print size for sharp results.
If prints consistently skew toward one color cast across different images, this usually points to either a low or clogged individual ink cartridge (run a nozzle check) or your monitor's display calibration not matching what actually gets printed, which is a display issue rather than a printer one — worth checking your screen's color settings if prints look accurate on-screen but wrong once printed.
