A printer that shows "out of paper" or simply won't pull a sheet in, even though the tray is clearly full, is a different problem from a jam — nothing is stuck. The roller responsible for grabbing paper isn't gripping it.
The small rubber roller that grabs the top sheet from your tray gradually loses grip over years of use, either from wearing smooth or from a buildup of paper dust and fine debris coating its surface. This is by far the most common cause of a printer that acts like the tray is empty when it isn't.
Too little paper (just one or two sheets) can sometimes feed less reliably than a fuller stack, since the roller has less to grip against — try adding more paper to the tray first as a quick test.
With the printer off, locate the pickup roller (usually visible just inside the tray opening or accessible by removing the tray). Wipe it with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water — avoid alcohol or harsh cleaners, which can actually make rubber rollers harder and less grippy over time rather than restoring them. Let it fully dry before reloading paper.
Paper that's curled, damp, or stuck together (fanning the stack before loading helps separate sheets that have stuck from humidity or static) can feed unreliably even with a perfectly good roller. Try a fresh, dry ream as a test.
Paper guides set too tight or too loose against the stack can prevent proper feeding — they should sit snug against the paper's edges without pinching it. Also confirm the tray's paper size setting (if your printer has one) actually matches what's loaded.
A pickup roller that's genuinely worn smooth (common after several years of heavy use) won't recover with cleaning and needs replacement — these are typically an inexpensive, user-replaceable part on most printers, and searching your exact model number plus "pickup roller replacement" will usually turn up the right part and a video walkthrough for your specific unit.
