How to Scan on a Canon Printer, Set Up the Right Way

By David · Published September 2, 2026 · 5 min read

Canon's scanning software is IJ Scan Utility, and it comes bundled inside the full driver package rather than as something you download separately — which is exactly why scanning stops working for people who only installed a "basic" driver.

Step 1: Install the full driver package, not the basic one

Go to Canon's official support site and search your exact model. Download the full driver and software package (sometimes labeled MP Drivers), not a "basic driver only" option if one is offered separately — IJ Scan Utility is included inside this full package, so a basic-only install won't give you scanning at all.

Step 2: Know which version you have

Canon runs two versions of this tool: the standard IJ Scan Utility for older printer and scanner models, and IJ Scan Utility Lite for current/newer models — particularly on Mac, where it leans on AirPrint for a simpler wireless scanning setup. You don't need to choose between them manually; whichever one your model supports installs automatically as part of the driver package.

Step 3: Open IJ Scan Utility and confirm it finds your printer

Launch the app — on Windows it'll be in your Start menu, on Mac in Applications. It should detect your Canon printer automatically if the driver installed correctly and the printer is on the same network. If it doesn't find anything, the driver install likely didn't complete fully — worth reinstalling before troubleshooting further.

Step 4: Scan a document

IJ Scan Utility's Auto Scan mode automatically detects whether you're scanning a photo, document, receipt, or business card, and adjusts resolution and color mode accordingly — a genuinely useful shortcut if you don't want to configure settings manually every time. For more control, use Document Scan mode instead, which lets you choose resolution, color mode, and output format (PDF, JPG, PNG, or TIFF) directly.

Scanning from your phone instead

The Canon PRINT app (mobile, iOS and Android) covers scanning from your phone's camera or directly from the printer over Wi-Fi, without needing IJ Scan Utility installed on a computer at all — useful if you just need a quick scan and don't have your computer nearby.

If the utility can't find your printer

Confirm the printer and computer are on the same Wi-Fi network (not a guest network, which is often isolated from other devices). If that checks out, uninstall and reinstall the full driver package rather than trying to reinstall IJ Scan Utility on its own — since it's bundled, a partial reinstall often doesn't fully fix a broken connection.
