Canon "The Scanning Unit (Cover) Is Open" Error

Step 1: Lift and firmly reclose the whole unit

Because this is the full scanner lid (not a small separate flap), it needs a firmer, more deliberate close than you might expect — lift it fully open, then lower it until it seats flat with a distinct stop. A lid that looks down but is resting slightly high at the back is the most common cause.

Step 2: Check for anything under the lid's edge

Open it again and check the full perimeter, not just where the ink cartridges sit — a stray piece of setup tape, a protective strip, or paper debris anywhere along the hinge line can keep the lid from seating flat even when it looks closed from the front.

Step 3: Confirm the cartridges are pushed fully down

With the unit open, press each ink cartridge firmly down until it clicks. On some Canon models, an unseated cartridge holds the internal carriage in a position that prevents the lid from reading as fully closed, even though nothing looks obviously wrong.

Step 4: Power cycle

Turn the printer off, unplug it, wait a minute, then reconnect. This clears a stuck sensor reading that can persist after the physical cause is already fixed.

If you have a MegaTank model

On MegaTank printers, this error can also appear if the printer thinks ink refill is in progress even after you've finished — some models use a similar mechanism to Epson's ink-tank printers, where the lid needs to be closed firmly enough to clear an internal lock state, not just rest shut. If you recently refilled a tank, make sure the lid was closed with a firm push after refilling, not just set back down.

If it still won't clear

This usually points to the sensor itself — a small optical or mechanical switch near the hinge that's failed or come loose, which is a genuine hardware issue rather than something further troubleshooting at home will fix. At that point, Canon support or a repair technician is the right next step.
