Brother laser printers report two genuinely separate covers with this error — the front cover you use daily, and the fuser cover tucked behind the back panel that most people never open. If you've only checked the front, that's likely why it hasn't cleared.
Check your control panel or the error LED pattern carefully — Brother distinguishes between "Front Cover Open" and "Fuser Cover Open" as two different messages. If it says fuser cover, checking and re-closing the front cover won't fix it, since that's not the one it's referring to.
Open the front cover fully, then close it with a firm, deliberate push. On many Brother models, the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly sit behind this cover — if either isn't fully seated, the cover can appear closed while the printer still reads it as open. Pull the drum-and-toner assembly out by its center handle, check that the toner cartridge is pushed firmly into the drum unit until it locks (a green lock lever on the side should lift automatically when it's seated correctly), then reinsert the whole assembly and close the cover again.
This one is easy to miss because it's not the cover you interact with normally. Open the back cover of the printer first, then look for the fuser cover behind it — make sure that one is also fully closed. This message specifically won't clear no matter how many times you check the front cover, since it's tracking a completely different sensor.
With the relevant cover open, check for foreign objects — paper clips, torn paper edges, leftover packaging — anywhere inside. Even a small obstruction near the hinge can keep a cover from reading as fully closed.
Switch off using the power button, then unplug for about a minute before reconnecting. This clears a sensor state that occasionally sticks even once the actual cause has been resolved.
This points to the cover's sensor switch itself, which can fail or shift out of alignment over time — a genuine hardware issue rather than something further troubleshooting fixes. Check whether your printer is still under warranty before assuming repair costs, since this kind of sensor fault is exactly what warranty coverage is meant for.
