A printer that's noticeably slower than it used to be, or slower than its rated speed, is usually explainable by a setting rather than aging hardware — and often fixable in under a minute.
By far the most common cause. "Best" or "High Quality" print modes lay down significantly more ink or toner per pass than "Normal" or "Draft" mode, and can slow a print job down dramatically — sometimes several times slower — especially for photo or graphics-heavy pages. Check your print settings and switch to Normal or Draft quality for everyday documents; reserve High Quality specifically for photos or documents where it visibly matters.
A document with high-resolution images, many fonts, or complex vector graphics takes genuinely longer to process before the printer can even start — this isn't the printer being slow, it's the file itself being large. If a specific document prints noticeably slower than others, this is very likely why, and there's not much to do about it beyond simplifying the file (compressing images, for instance) if speed matters more than quality for that particular print.
Sending large jobs over Wi-Fi is slower than over a wired USB or Ethernet connection, particularly on an older or congested home network. If speed matters for a specific high-volume task, connecting via USB temporarily (if your printer supports it) can meaningfully cut transfer time, even though ordinary day-to-day wireless printing is fine for most people.
Many printers, especially laser models, enter a low-power sleep state after a period of inactivity and need a warm-up period — sometimes 10-30 seconds — before the first page of a new job starts. This isn't a fault; it's designed behavior to save energy, and only affects the very first job after a period of idle time, not ongoing printing.
On some office-class printers, particularly older units, printing a very large or image-heavy document can be slowed by limited onboard memory that needs to process the job in smaller chunks rather than all at once. This is specific to certain printer models and workloads rather than a general problem, and if it's a recurring issue with regularly large documents, checking whether your specific model supports a memory upgrade is worth looking into.
Before assuming anything else, check the print quality setting — it's the single most common and most impactful cause, and unlike the network or hardware-related causes, it's something you control directly every time you print.
An outdated driver can also limit which quality and speed options are available.
