A failed driver installation almost always comes down to one of five causes. Working through them in this order resolves the large majority of cases without reinstalling your operating system's printing subsystem from scratch.
Third-party driver sites and pre-installed operating system drivers are the single biggest cause of installation failures, since they're often outdated, mismatched to your exact model, or bundled with unnecessary software that conflicts with the real driver. Uninstall whatever's currently there, and download fresh directly from your printer brand's own official support site for your exact model number.
For USB installations specifically, plugging the cable in before running the installer often causes your operating system to auto-load a generic, limited driver the moment it detects the device — and once that's happened, the real installer can conflict with it or refuse to proceed cleanly. Unplug the USB cable, uninstall any generic driver that got auto-installed, and only reconnect when the official installer explicitly prompts you to.
If this printer (or even a different model from the same brand) was installed on this computer before, leftover driver files and registry entries can silently block a clean reinstall, causing the installer to fail partway with no clear explanation. Most manufacturers publish a dedicated "driver removal" or "clean uninstall" utility separate from the standard uninstaller — running this before reinstalling clears conflicts a normal uninstall misses.
Some antivirus and firewall software blocks driver installers by default, since installing low-level system drivers is a common technique used by actual malware — legitimate printer installers get caught in this net more often than you'd expect. Temporarily disabling security software during installation only (then re-enabling it immediately after) is a reasonable, standard troubleshooting step here.
Occasionally a driver requires a more recent version of Windows or macOS than what's currently installed, and the installer fails with a vague error rather than stating this directly. Checking for and installing any pending operating system updates before trying again resolves this less common but genuinely frustrating cause.
Restart the computer fully (not just close and reopen the installer) before your next attempt — a partial previous installation attempt can leave background processes running that block a fresh one, and a full restart clears this reliably.
