Xerox — Smart Start setup

Xerox doesn't have its own driver library on JustFixPrinter, but its official installer covers setup end-to-end, so here's the real process rather than a link to a page that no longer exists.

Quick answer

  1. Download Xerox Smart Start from Xerox's own site — not a third-party driver page.
  2. Run it: it scans your network for compatible Xerox printers automatically.
  3. Choose Quick Install for the simple route, or Advanced Install for control over the print system, driver type, scan driver, and printer name.
  4. Finish the install and print a test page.
  5. On supported Windows setups, also install the Xerox Print and Scan Experience app (via the Microsoft Store or Xerox support) for extra print/scan features.

If Smart Start can't find your printer: confirm it's powered on and joined to the same network as your computer, restart both the printer and its network connection and try again, or use the installer's manual entry option with the printer's hostname or IP address. If an administrator prompt appears and you don't have those credentials, ask whoever manages that computer to finish the install.

Which printer should I buy?

A short, honest breakdown by brand and series — matched to what you actually print, not just price.

HP

DeskJet — light home use, under ~100 pages/month. ENVY — adds duplex and better photos (Inspire line has a dedicated photo tray). OfficeJet / OfficeJet Pro — home-office workhorse, 300–800 pages/month, ADF included. LaserJet — toner-based, sharp text at real volume, over 500 pages/month. Smart Tank — refillable ink, lowest running cost, best for high volume on a budget.

Know before you buy: opting into HP+ during setup permanently locks the printer to genuine HP cartridges, even after you cancel Instant Ink — skip it if third-party ink matters to you.

Canon

PIXMA — Canon's strongest photo output alongside documents, best for mixed home use. MAXIFY — small-office inkjet, faster with higher-yield cartridges and an ADF. imageCLASS — laser, best for high-volume text. MegaTank — refillable ink tanks, lowest cost-per-page, trades away some speed.

Epson

Expression — home photo-plus-document printing at moderate volume, known for accurate color. WorkForce — small-office speed with an ADF. EcoTank — Epson's refillable tank system, best when ongoing ink cost matters more than speed.

Know before you buy: Epson's liquid ink can clog if a printer sits unused for more than a couple of weeks — true even for EcoTank, so print something small regularly.

Brother & Lexmark

Both lean business/laser rather than consumer photo inkjet. Brother: HL = print-only, DCP = adds scan/copy, MFC = adds fax — laser models are the brand's strongest, reliable, low running cost. Lexmark: business-first, built for real sustained office volume; many current models show the exact jam location on their touchscreen instead of a generic message. Neither is the strongest choice for photo-quality color — look at HP, Canon or Epson for that.

Setting up, installing & managing your printer

Six common setup and driver questions that apply across every brand above.

The printer setup process, explained

Every printer goes through the same underlying stages regardless of brand. Remove every piece of shipping tape and foam before powering on, including pieces tucked behind the cartridge door or under the scanner lid — a shifted carriage is the most common "defect" that isn't one. Let the first calibration cycle finish completely without interrupting it; it's measuring your unit's specific print-head alignment. Don't connect the USB cable or join Wi-Fi until the installer or the printer's own control panel asks for it — joining Wi-Fi from your computer's settings instead of the printer's panel often connects the two to technically different networks. Search your exact model number and install the full-feature driver, not the smaller basic one, or scanning can quietly not work. Always print a test page: it's the only step that confirms the entire chain actually works.

Driver won't install? Try this order

In order of likelihood: (1) you're not using the manufacturer's own installer — uninstall whatever's there and get it fresh from the brand's official site; (2) the printer was connected too early over USB, which can make the OS auto-load a generic driver that conflicts with the real one — unplug it and only reconnect when the installer asks; (3) leftover files from a previous install are blocking a clean one — some brands publish a dedicated cleanup utility, otherwise do a complete standard removal; (4) security software is blocking the installer — disable it temporarily during installation only; (5) a pending OS update is required. If none of that works, a full restart (not just closing the installer) before your next attempt clears background processes that block a fresh try.

Setting a default printer (Windows & Mac)

Windows: Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → click your printer → Set as default. If that option is missing, turn off "Let Windows manage my default printer," which otherwise auto-switches the default to whatever you used most recently. Mac: System Settings → Printers & Scanners → the Default printer dropdown at the bottom. Watch for "Last Printer Used" behaving the same way as Windows' auto-switching. Some individual apps also remember their own last-used printer separately from the system default — check that app's print settings if jobs keep going to the wrong place in just one program.

Setting up an existing printer on a new computer

If the printer's already on Wi-Fi, this is the easy part: add it from Printers & Scanners (Windows: Add device; Mac: Add Printer) and it should appear automatically. Install the full manufacturer driver afterward, even if basic printing already works, since the OS's automatic driver often skips scanning and advanced features. If it doesn't appear, confirm the printer's own display still shows a valid Wi-Fi connection, then add it manually by IP address if needed. There's nothing to "transfer" between computers — the printer holds its own network settings, so the new computer just needs its own fresh driver install.

Sharing one printer between computers

Wireless printers: trivial — every computer on the network adds it independently, no sharing setup needed. USB printers: the host computer must explicitly enable sharing (Windows: Printer properties → Sharing tab; Mac: System Settings → General → Sharing → Printer Sharing), and it needs to stay on and awake for anyone else to print. Other computers then add it the same way as any network printer. If depending on one computer staying on is a problem, a small wireless print server can make a USB-only printer network-visible instead.

Uninstalling and reinstalling a driver correctly

Worth doing when: the printer shows installed but nothing happens when you print, duplex or scanning has disappeared, it stopped working after an OS update, or you're moving it to a new network. Won't help with paper jams or hardware faults. Windows: remove the printer from Printers & scanners, then also uninstall the manufacturer's software package from Installed apps — removing just the queue entry can leave driver files behind. Mac: removing the printer from Printers & Scanners is usually enough on its own. Restart before installing anything new, then download the current driver by your exact model number — not a generic one — from the manufacturer's official site.
